What Is a Waterproof Backpack?

A waterproof backpack keeps its contents dry in heavy rain, spray and, depending on its construction, short or long immersion. Unlike a standard backpack with a rain cover, a waterproof backpack is protected by its own shell: coated PVC or TPU fabric, seams fused by high-frequency welding instead of stitching, and a sealed closure. The most common closure is the roll-top, which turns the backpack into a dry bag backpack. Welded zippers and airtight zippers offer faster access for commuting and travel.

How Do You Choose Between Roll-Top and Zipper Backpacks?

Roll-top backpacks seal reliably and are simple to repair, which makes them the standard for kayaking, rafting, boating and wet hiking. Our 38L roll-top backpack with window adds a purge valve so it can be packed tight and still float, and our 35L roll-top backpack uses 420D TPU with an integrated air-release valve. Zipper designs open faster. Our 30L welded clamshell backpack opens flat to 180 degrees, and our IPX8 airtight-zipper backpack is tested for submersion.

Which Waterproof Rating Do You Need?

IPX6 means protection against heavy rain and powerful water jets, which suits cycling, commuting and hiking. IPX7 covers short immersion and suits most paddle sports. IPX8 covers continuous immersion and suits boat crews, kayak commuters and anyone who cannot risk water at all. We test every batch to its rating, with a full water-immersion test of two hours or more for IPX7 and IPX8 models and heavy rain and water-jet testing for IPX6 models.

Which Waterproof Backpacks Suit Commuting and Travel?

Is a roll top backpack really waterproof?

A welded roll-top backpack folded at least three times keeps water out in heavy rain and spray, and many are rated IPX7 for short immersion. For long submersion, choose a pack with an airtight zipper rated IPX8.

What is the difference between a dry bag backpack and a waterproof backpack?

A dry bag backpack is a waterproof backpack built like a dry bag, usually with a roll-top closure and welded seams. Waterproof backpack is the wider term and also includes welded zipper and airtight-zipper designs.

Will a waterproof backpack float?

A sealed roll-top backpack with air trapped inside usually floats, and purge valves help control the air. A backpack is never a flotation device.

Can I get a waterproof backpack with a laptop compartment?

Yes. Our range includes welded and sewn backpacks with padded sleeves for laptops up to 15.6 or 16 inches, many suspended off the base to keep the laptop away from pooled water.

What is the MOQ for custom waterproof backpacks?
